WordPress was born out of a desire for an elegant, well-architectured publishing system built on PHP and MySQL. It is the official successor of b2/cafelog. WordPress’ roots and development go back to 2001 making it an amazingly mature and stable application.

WordPress 3.0 intoduced the ability to host and manage multiple websites powered by WordPress, each of which may have their own unique functionality and/or look and feel.  It offers a freely distributed, standards-compliant, fast, light and free personal publishing platform, with sensible default settings and features, and an extremely customizable core.
